Supporting delirium patients:
Thanks to your support and donations, we have been able to support our Enhanced Care and Engagement Support Team with Enhanced Care Resource Bags.
These are distration bags that are designed to be therapeutically engaging which our Enhance Support Workers will carry around with them to enable them to engage with dementia patients.
Included in the bags:
- Resoures like puzzles, family tree, colouring etc
- Twiddle Muffs
- Crayons
- Fidget items
- Nail polish and hand cream
- Playing cards
These bags are here to help cure boredom as well as occupy the patients' brain.
When a dementia patient is admitted to a ward, a Enhanced Support Worker will fill out a 'See Who I Am' form with the patient. This is done so that colleagues can capture information about the patient quickly. This form is helpful for Support Worker to understand how they can help to distract the individual through conversation etc - this bag can then be tailored for the patients benefit.
"Prior to this role, I was an Enhanced Care Support Worker providing 1:1 support to patients with dementia and/or delirium and quickly realised the impracticalities of leaving the patient to searc for resources to aid distraction and therapeutic activity. I created my own bag that I had with me at all times and this made my life much easier. When I started this role, with support of management and our fabulous CHFT Charity, I started the process of creating the resoure bags and I'm so pleased with the result. I hope they will have a positive impat on patient care and experience" - Rachel Bennett, Prevention of Delirium Co-ordinator.
