From ICU to Coast to Coast

Robert Freeman is walking coast to coast, 192.2 miles, over 10 days, the hike started on Saturday 9th July from St Bees. Robert is kindly wanting to give back to the incredible ICU team at Calderdale Royal Hospital who saved his life 3 times in the space of a month.

The coast to coast walk is a famous British hike designed by Alfred Wainwright that steers across the UK's landscape fom St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay. The C2C rambling route passes through three national parks: the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the North York Moors National Park.

'I have decied to take up this challenge as I am well on the way to recovering after I nearly died from COVID pneumonia.

'In early August of last year, on my return from my honeymoon in Spain, I collapsed on the plane. At first, we thought it was a chest infection, unfortunately I later found out that I had COVID. After a few days, I was rushed into Huddersfield Royal Infirmary before being transferred to Calderdale Royal Hospital. I was then put into ICU where, if it wasn't for the help of the staff, I would have died.

'I am doing my bit now by trying to give a little bit back. I am a keen long-distance walker and will spend most of my nights out wild camping on my trip. I want everyone to know what an amazing job every does at the hospitals and I look forward to trying to raise as mucn as I can' - Robert Freeman.
