Thanks to patient feedback and generous donations, CHFT Charity have been able to support a 12-month project through funding a set of weighing scales to enable dietician assistants to assess and monitor patients' weight when out on their visits.
The project is all about supporting newly diagnosed cancer patients to provide diet and nutrition advice and education within a patients' home, local community sites and chemotherapy units. On behalf of our cancer wards and colleagues, we would like to say a special thanks to West Yorkshire & Harrogate Cancer Alliance who granted the team funding to implement the project. Two dieticians were recruited to deliver the support which aims to reduce the rise of malnutrition, optimise people for cancer treatement, improve recovery and experience.
Colin is a patient of ours and has colorectal cancer, and his experience was affected when nutrition support wasn't available at the time that he needed it. This inevitably resulted in an unplanned admission to hospital. Colin's experience and contact with the Trust resulted in the connection between himself and Nicky Hill, Prehabilitation and Nutrition Project Lead.
"Having Colin share his experience provided evidence to support the funding bid for the project and Colin is an integral member of the project group, shaping the way the service and support is delivered. Proving that patient voice is essential and developing care in the right way that meets their needs." - Nicky Hill.
"There was a gap in the colorectal service and specifically nutritional assessment and advice. Nicky's project is filling this gap. All the evidence and advice are that good nutrition will help you live with cancer, and I have to say that has definitely been the case during my journey" - Colin, patient at CHFT.
We really do value patients' feedback; this helps us to make imporvements to our patients' experience and care as well as continue to fund items that are already in place and making a difference. If you would like to give feedback, then please take the Friends and Family Test.
